Google has announced a new feature that eliminates the need for passwords or two-step verification (2SV) when accessing your Google account. Called passkeys, this innovative access method enhances user security by preventing phishing attacks and unauthorized Google account access through phone numbers and SMS verification.
How Passkeys Function for Google Account Access
Upon activating passkeys for your Google account, they will be requested whenever you log in or perform actions involving sensitive data. The passkey itself is stored locally on your computer or mobile phone. When attempting to access your Google account, there will be a requirement for the user’s biometrics or PIN. Notably, you cannot share biometric data with Google or any third party.
Advantages of Passkeys over Traditional Security Measures for Google Account Access
Passkeys offer a more secure alternative to traditional security measures, such as written codes often obtained through accidentally shared data or stolen information. This method is more secure than most two-step authentication (2FA/MFA) methods. Google states that when you enable the feature, the system will not request a password or a 2SV method (2FA/MFA).
Utilizing Passkeys on Smartphones and Computers
Google allows passkey creation for both smartphones and computers. When activating the feature for the first time, the system will automatically add access keys to your mobile phone. To add passkeys to a computer, the user must activate their laptop’s Bluetooth. This will carry out verification using their phone to confirm their identity.
